Medieval Norfolk had a greater concentration of churches than anywhere else in Europe. Each of the survivors is special and filled with art-historical treasures from stone angels to fantastical creatures hatched by medieval minds. This spectacular fifteenth-century chancel screen with its lively lions and unspoilt contemporary paintings of the evangelists is only one example of Norfolk’s painted past. The panel you see here depicts St. Matthew as a winged man, open book in hand.
