Norwich is often termed ‘a church enthusiast’s paradise’, because it possesses more medieval churches than any other English town or city. The church of St. John, Maddermarket joined this illustrious collection in the fifteenth century.
Due to the iconoclasm of the seventeenth century and a later gas explosion, little of St. John’s medieval glass survives. Most of the glass in the church today is from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and is influenced by Anglo-Catholicism. The three main lights of the East window contain a beautiful Annunciation scene. Depicted on this card is a detail from this scene showing the Angel Gabriel. This window, by James Powell & Sons was given by the communicants of the church in 1913.
