All Souls’ Hayley Hill, Halifax:

All Souls’ was designed by the renowned Sir George Gilbert Scott. He is credited as the pioneer of the Gothic Revival during the Victorian period, having also designed the St Pancras Hotel and the Prince Albert memorial. In his memoirs he boasted that All Souls’ Haley Hill in Halifax was “on the whole, my best church”.

A prominent feature of All Souls’, which was built between 1856-9, is it’s remarkable ceiling. It is adorned with various glittering gilt panels of angels and, as in this year’s design, stars, making for an iridescent and beautiful interior mapping of the heavens.

All Souls’ was vested into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust in 1988.
