Virgin and Child
This recently rediscovered Arts and Crafts window from St Mary’s, Shrewsbury has been conserved as part of the National Lottery Heritage Fund project
The Past, Present and Future of St. Mary’s Stained Glass.
It was commissioned as a memorial to Emma F Meredith by her cousin, also called Emma Meredith, whom she lived with towards the end of her life.
This draws an interesting parallel to the lives of cousins and co-creators
Margaret Agnes Rope (Marga) and Margaret Edith Rope (Tor), who also shared a first and last name and to whom this window is jointly attributed. The two Margaret Ropes often collaborated on commissions with Marga designing the panels and Tor executing them and it is probable that this was also the case for this newly rediscovered window at St. Mary’s.
This window has recently been reinstalled in St Mary’s in a backlit viewing panel where visitors are now able to observe the details up close.
